How Likely is Nuclear War?

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, President Kennedy estimated the probability of nuclear war between the US and Soviet Union “between one in three and even.” If you buying scratch-offs or playing Powerball at the local 7-11, you probably like those odds. But at the height of the crisis, millions of Americans nudged to the edge of their seats as they waited for thermonuclear weapons to rain down on every American metropolis. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and the world escaped this nearest brush with the ‘fire of the gods.’ But today, the dust from the footpath to this taboo precipice has once again been swept away with the building fury of the Russo-Ukrainian war creating a possible flashpoint for WWIII. With formal military alliances now threating a full-on war, we find ourselves wondering, ‘Just how likely is nuclear war?’
How Likely is Nuclear War?
We’re not in the business of fear mongering, so we won’t overhype the chances of nuclear warfare. You’ve had enough of the talking heads working you up over the past several weeks. Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine is the largest conflict to hit Europe since the end of WWII, so it’s obviously concerning. Ukraine is also bordered by the entire NATO contingency that was developed to counter any Soviet, or later Russian aggression. If the conflict was to directly or inadvertently spill over into a NATO country, this would almost certainly develop into a world war, but again, the chances of this happening are still pretty low. With the ground war stalling to a halt, Putin could resort to biological or nuclear weapons to achieve his long-term agenda in the already divided nation. In a drastic show of force, Putin could detonate a nuclear weapon over an uninhabited region of the Ukraine or over the open water. Russia might also deploy smaller, but equally demoralizing strategic nuclear weapons to quell any civil unrest and resistance.
How to Restore Your Peace of Mind
You can’t control the saber rattling of world leaders and politicians. Thankfully, this latest round of threats is likely more defensive posturing from Putin, who has no real intention of launching the world into a nuclear war. That would ultimately lead to the end of his empire. Putin has other imperatives and will likely stick to conventional warfare unless he wants the full brunt of the world’s power to come down on him. There’s also the doctrine of mutual assured destruction, which in a weird way, prevents nuclear armed countries from going to war with one another because it could end in complete annihilation for both warring parties. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t invest in guaranteed steel protection. While the chances of nuclear war are slim, they are never zero. A 4×4 Elephant Safe Room is more than enough steel to put between you and harm’s way.
