Alberto Kicks Off 2024 Hurricane Season

2024 hurricane season

The 2024 hurricane season’s first named storm, Alberto, made landfall in Mexico Thursday morning. At least three people were killed, and the death toll could quickly rise once rescue operations commence. While Tropical Storm Alberto’s heavy rains brought welcomed relief to the drought-stricken region, an additional five to 10 inches of forecasted rainfall will swell rivers and streams past their banks. Twenty inches of rain are possible across higher elevations. Although the storm only packed 45-mile-per-hour windspeeds, the combination of wind-driven precipitation and its slow-moving trek allowed Alberto to deposit heavy rainfall across Mexico’s Veracruz state.

Storm Season Begins Early for Gulf Coast

Situated between five and 20 degrees latitude – the primordial sweet spot for all nascent tropical activity – the Gulf of Mexico is a prominent hurricane corridor. The region experiences at least one significant storm annually, and the gulf’s soupy warm waters have fueled some of the United States’ most devastating storms. Meteorologists are anticipating a busy 2024 hurricane season. Although forecasters always anticipate a margin of error, they expect 17 to 25 named storms this year.  The National Weather Service expects eight to 13 of those tropical storms will become hurricanes. Furthermore, forecasters believe four to seven hurricanes will reach category 3, 4, or 5 strength.
