Earthquakes Strike in Georgia and Ohio

Instead, today we’re going to bring to light a few minor earthquakes that caused quite a tremor in very unsuspecting areas.
Earthquakes in Georgia
If you’ve been paying any attention to the news lately, you’ve probably heard that the state of Georgia is going through a bit of a rough patch. A recent fire caused the collapse and shutdown of a major freeway in Atlanta, and just last week a series of storms spawned tornadoes which killed two people and caused damage across the state. Just when you thought it wouldn’t get any worse, a pair of earthquakes shook the Sparta area during the evening of Wednesday, April 5th. At the time, thunderstorms were rolling through the area, making the 2.5-magnitude and 2.7-magnitude earthquakes nearly unnoticeable to some nearby residents. The two tremors occurred within about ten minutes of one another, ending just before 10 p.m. that evening.
Authorities state that the quakes did not cause any damage. According to the USGS, Hancock County (where the town of Sparta, GA is located) has recorded only five earthquakes prior to Wednesday night, with the most recent one occurring in 2012.
Tremor in Southeast Ohio
In addition to reports of shaking in the Peach State, the USGS also measured a 3.0-magnitude earthquake in Ohio early last week. The tremor struck in Monroe County in the southeast corner of the state, close to the border with West Virginia. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department did not get any reports of problems the following morning.
