This is prevailing fallacy: American forces fighting overseas to secure oil futures for the US. This is simply myopic and doesn’t begin to explain a multifaceted military doctrine that depends on security agreements. But let’s not digress. Despite what the talking heads on tv might say, Saudi Arabia and Iraq come in after Canada and Mexico for the composition of American oil imports.
Oil Drives Economic Forces, Including War
So, why does it seem America is always entangled in Middle East affairs? Believe it or not, America’s Middle East policy isn’t rooted in black gold. The United States builds its foreign policy in the Middle East to diminish the capacity of terror organizations that threaten security agreements with Israel and Saudi Arabia. Of course, much of America’s influence posits on the preemptive nature of curtailing Iran’s militant proxies, including Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as the country’s nuclear ambitions. Despite the numerous recent American operations in the Middle East, America’s vested interest in the region dates back more than 200 years.
Since The Tripolitan War in the 1800s, America has kept a close eye on the region. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan necessitated a more robust military doctrine for stymying communist influence. But we must be honesty: you can’t have a conversation about U.S. military action in the Middle East without mentioning oil albeit not for the reasons of empire or soft colonialism. America’s involvement in the region escalated with Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. And why did Iraq invade? That’s right: oil. Of course it’s undeniable that Judea Christian ethos embolden most of the public sentiment of older generations of Americans who see Israel as a key security ally.
Will There Be A Second Gulf War?
Following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israeli settlements, the entire region has set on the precipice of war. Iran vows retaliation on Israeli and American forces through its extensive proxy network that slithers across the fringes of Palestine like a duplicitous serpent. Houthi rebels, urged on by the shadow influence of Iran, have begun attacking vital shipping lanes in the Red Sea, necessitating American air strikes. America’s most prominent security allies on the peninsula have gone as far as to condemn the attacks. With the war in Ukraine raging on, many international leaders remain fearful of WWIII.
Despite the most recent uptick in sectarian violence in the region, oil, for once, isn’t a major driving force in the conflict. Still, there’s a second conflict much closer to home involving a struggle for petroleum that might once again require American intervention. Guyana and Venezuela have found themselves in a shouting match about who controls the contested Essequibo region in western Guyana. The region has been historically recognized belonging to Guyana, but Venezluea, citing poorly drawn British border surveys dating back to the 1800s, has revived its claim to the region following major oil and gas discoveries. Guyana is fearful that Venezuela might make good on its promise to annex the region. This would almost certainly necessitate an American response similar to our intervention in the Persian Gulf War.
